Moreover, you have also started to avoid clients’ phone calls and text messages. You have occasionally appeared emotionally detached and disinterested during team meetings. You have seen the comments made about the  decline in the quality of your work in your mid-placement performance evaluation  form.

Compassion fatigue and three signs in the scenario

Comparison fatigue can be defined as the emotional and psychological strain faced by social workers when they are exposed to clients’ trauma, suffering and distress. The three signs that are evident in the given scenario are emotional exhaustion and hopelessness, reduced empathy and emotional detachment, and withdrawal and deterioration in work performance.

Three strategies to manage compassion fatigue

The three important strategies to consider are structured self-care and recovery by establishing boundaries that reduces exposure to work related emotional demands, utilising supervision and peer support to help identify emotional overload, improve coping and prevent professional isolation, and finally to manage workload and exposure to traumatic cases, as it will help in protecting emotional capacity while maintaining service quality.

Three supervision goals based on the NSWCF

The three supervision goals are to improve professional self-management and wellbeing by developing a weekly well-being plan with Lisa defining workload boundaries and recovery activities. Secondly it is to strengthen case management and intervention practice by reviewing violence cases during supervision to identify barriers and develop clearer action plans. Thirdly it is to develop reflective and ethical practice by utilising supervision in order to examine how emotional exhaustion is affecting empathy to recognise personal limits early and seek assistance before they affect client outcomes.

SASW values and the importance of self-care

The SASW Core values include service and self-care is important because emotional exhaustion can reduce the ability to respond to clients effectively. Another SASW core value is social justice that allows social workers to continue advocating vulnerable clients rather than being disengaged. The SASW core value of dignity and worth of the person needs self-care because emotional detachment can unintentionally affect empathetic interaction with clients. The SASW values of integrity and competence are important in recognising one’s limitations and professional development helps in maintaining sound judgement and quality of practice.

Comparison of first and second social work placement

The first placement is MSF enabling division and the second placement is Allkin Youth Centre. The practice type in first placement is indirect social work practice whereas in second placement, it is mainly direct social work practice. The focus in first placement was on planning and policy for persons with special needs while the second placement directs support for youth at risk. The client contact was limited and indirect in first placement while it was regular and direct interaction with young people in the second placement. The interventions in the first placement includes policy planning, programme development and research and systems level work while the second placement includes engagement, assessment, counselling support and referral. The key challenge in the first placement was understanding broader social needs and translating them into programmes while this the key challenge in the second placement was on building trust, managing complex needs and responding to client concerns.

Similarities – The similarities in both the placements are the focus which includes ethical practice, professional boundaries, communication, assessment of needs and collaboration with other stakeholders.

Critical differences – In respect to the first placement on MSF enabling division placement, the focus was on macro level perspective as the master plan demonstrates how social policies and programmes can address systematic needs of persons with disabilities. The second placement on the Allkin Youth centre placement provides a micro level perspective by way of direct practice with youth at risk. It is important that the students should establish rapport, understand individual circumstances and participate directly in interventions.
