Reflective answer on CSR, Sustainable Development and Public Policy

This module on CSR, sustainable development and public policy has significantly changed my understanding about the concept of corporate social responsibility because earlier I viewed it as a charitable activity and donation made by companies. But when I studied this concept in the module, I learned that CSR is rather a strategic approach that combines ethical, social, environmental and economic responsibilities into business operations.

There are many topics I have studied in this module but the most significant one that has influenced my perspective was plastic pollution and environment sustainability. Before undertaking this module, I had a belief that it is primarily the responsibility of the government to take initiatives aimed at protecting the environment. But while studying sustainable development and public policy in this module, I have understood that it is the collective effort of everyone including businesses, consumers and the government to work towards achieving sustainable goals. Policies by the government aimed at promoting waste reduction and corporate sustainability reporting encourages organisations to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

This module has also contributed towards improved knowledge and understanding about the relationship between public policy and business behaviour. I have learnt that the corporate decision making process is significantly influenced by the regulations, environmental standards and sustainability frameworks and they can contribute positively towards driving social change.

Overall the module has been quite effective in enhancing my awareness about ethical consumption and environmental responsibilities. I have also understood that businesses need to make a proper balance between the profitability and social and environmental obligations to ensure long term sustainability of their business with high growth performance.
