Question 1
Answer the following question.
In his National Day Rally speech on 17 August 2025, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong acknowledged the ambivalence and even anxiety that many Singaporeans have about the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He said in his speech, “In the past, technological change created disruption, but also new opportunities – and people were able to upgrade to higherskilled, and better-paying jobs. Many worry that this time things will be different. Because AI can do more than just help us at work. It can potentially replace many tasks – even entire jobs. I understand these concerns.”

Your Task
You are a feature journalist with The Straits Times. Your editor has assigned you to write a human-interest feature story examining the evolving attitudes and concerns that youths have towards AI, particularly its potential impact on their careers.
Your editor’s brief to you is to humanise this topic through the perspectives and experiences of three Singaporean youths of different demographic profiles. These could be, for example, a university student on the cusp of graduation in his/her early-twenties, a fresh entrant in the job market in his/her mid- or late-twenties, and a mid-career professional in his/her thirties.
In order to incorporate a diversity of views, you should ensure a spread of genders and profiles among the three Singaporeans you interview for this feature story.

AI and future – career uncertainty among Singapore youths
Story – The role and implication of artificial intelligence is significant in every field and the ways in which it is changing the process in which people work, learn and plan their futures. In a national day rally, Lawrence Wong has raised a significant concern among the Singaporean youths especially with respect to the impact of AI and their career opportunities.
The uncertainty is quite clearly available in a final year University student Sarah Lim, 23 who is clearly uncertain about her future. She answered ” I am quite excited about the developments in AI but at the same time it also worries me because the pace at which the changes are taking place might completely change the skills and abilities needed that I am learning now till when I graduate, which will put my job prospects under threat after I graduate.
Another graduate Daniel Tan, 27 has recently joined a multinational organisation as a marketing executive, and witnesses AI as both a tool and a threat. With the help of AI, he is able to carry out his work faster because of automation, but he also wonders if the company needs fewer people to carry outside such roles and responsibilities. He believes that adaptability is the key to remaining competitive and prosper in this AI generation.
These themes clearly identifies a cautious optimism which clearly indicates that AI not only provides opportunity but also creates a fear among youth and forces them to adopt a lifelong learning approach in order to remain competitive.
