Expert Answer on Above Journal Article Review

The study selected for the purpose of analysis is:
Szemik, S., Zieleń-Zynek, I., Szklarek, E., & Kowalska, M. (2024). Prevalence and determinants of overweight or obesity among medical students over a 2-year observation. Frontiers in Nutrition, 11, 1437292.

Main research area

The main focus area in the given research is on analysing public health, nutrition and Lifestyle medicine with specific emphasis given to overweight and obesity risk factors among young adults.

Research gap

There is significant literature analysing the issue of obesity among the general population but there is very little analysis on weight trends and determinants among medical students who are expected to have higher health knowledge but experience stress and unhealthy habits.

Two supporting prior studies:

The two supporting studies are
1) studies clearly indicating the issue of obesity among University students globally.
2) research showing higher levels of stress, sleep and irregular eating patterns among medical students leading to the issue of weight gain.

Research question

What are the factors leading to the issue of overweight and obesity among medical students, and what are specific Lifestyle or demographic factors that can be related to it?

Variables measured

The variables that are measured in the given study all body mass index, weight status categories, lifestyle behaviour and demographics.

Participant demographics

The participants in the given study are the medical students from a University and the study was carried out over a two years period.

Two major findings

The two major findings in the study are a significant increase in the issue of overweight/obesity over the study period, and secondly it is identified that lifestyle factors such as low physical activity, poor diet and stress have all contributed towards higher BMI.

Two limitations

The two limitations that were identified in the study are self reported lifestyle data, and the sample was taken from a single institution.

Future research areas

The future research areas that can be followed in the upcoming research are to analyse the long term followup to analyse if the weight gain continues after graduation, and secondly the intervention studies to analyse the programs that promote healthy eating, stress management and physical activity among medical students.

Real world relevance

This study has significant relevance to the real world situation as it helps in enhancing the awareness of stress related weight gain and also highlights the importance of routine health behaviour.
