PSY213 Mental Health and Well-being in Singapore
Question 1: Informational Poster (40 Marks)
You are part of a National Youth Mental Health Initiative that aims to raise awareness about emerging mental health conditions among young people in Singapore. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and various community partners, your task force is focusing on increasing early detection and intervention for complex emotional and personality-related difficulties.
Recent studies have shown that many adolescents and young adults who struggle with intense emotions, unstable relationships, and impulsive behaviour often go undiagnosed until much later in life. One such condition is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), which often begins to surface in the late teens or early twenties but is commonly misunderstood or overlooked.
Your team has been asked to design a one-page A4 informational poster that can be displayed in polyclinics, youth counselling centres, schools, and public libraries. The goal is to help young people better recognise the early warning signs of BPD and understand the importance of seeking timely support.
In the poster, you must address the following:
- Identify what BPD is, including how it may show up in daily life
- Describe risk factors and life experiences that can contribute to BPD symptoms
- Appraise practical pathways to support
Additional instructions:
- Your poster should strictly adhere to an A4 size format, with 210 x 297 mm dimensions.
- Please use a minimum font size of 12.
- You do not need to adhere to any document page margin.
- You may write in both point form statements and in full sentences.
- You are free to use graphical elements and colours to make your poster visually appealing.
- You may design your poster in either portrait or landscape format.
- In-text citations should be included in your poster.
- A minimum of 5 academic references are needed throughout the entire assignment.
Please embed your poster as an image in the last page of the word .doc of your ECA submission.
Your reference list should be provided on a separate page together with the references list for Question 2.
Question 2: Essay (60 Marks)
This question contains two sub-parts (a) and (b), based on the scenario below.
It was a rainy Tuesday evening when you received a text message from your cousin, Daniel. Daniel, a 25-year-old university graduate, had recently moved back in with his parents after leaving his job abruptly. You remembered how passionate he was about art and how he used to enjoy painting in his free time. However, over the past few months, Daniel had become increasingly withdrawn and irritable. He often avoided social gatherings and seemed to have lost interest in things he used to love.
During your last visit, Daniel told you he believed the neighbours were spying on him and that the television was sending him special coded messages. His parents mentioned that he had been talking to himself in his room and became agitated without any apparent reason. Concerned, you decided to check in on him.
You opened the text message and this was what it said:
Daniel [7:49pm]: They’re watching me. I know they are. I can hear them through the walls. I tried to block the signals, but it’s getting worse.
(a) Select how you would respond to the text message with one of the following options:
A. I believe you’re really scared right now, Daniel. I want to understand more about what’s happening so I can help you.
B. You’re just imagining things. No one is spying on you.
C. This is ridiculous. You need to snap out of it and be normal again.
D. That sounds really overwhelming, Daniel. Can you tell me more about the messages you’ve been noticing?
Demonstrate basic competencies of facilitation you have learned from Growth Circle sessions by writing an essay explaining your decision. Provide an elaboration of your response to better support your selected option.
Note: There is no one correct answer, although some options might be better than others. Marks will be awarded based on your critical reasoning skills.
[Word limit: 400 words]
(20 marks)
(b) After your reply to Daniel, the response from him was as follows:
Daniel [8:01pm]: You probably think I’m crazy. Everyone does. But I know what I hear, and I know it’s real.
You really want to be there for Daniel, but you have no idea how to reply him. As such, you quickly turned to ChatGPT (OpenAI) for suggested responses, before improving on the outputs from there. Practice the skills needed to interact with people with mental health conditions by describing how you will reply to Daniel.
- Put TWO separate prompts of no more than 15 words each into ChatGPT (OpenAI) to obtain two alternative solutions for how to respond to Daniel.
- For each ChatGPT (OpenAI) output, based on your knowledge of mental health conditions and the social competencies acquired from this course, improve on the outputs and create two possible replies to Daniel.
- Reflect on your replies by explaining why you responded that way, and how you have improved ChatGPT’s (OpenAI) outputs.

Selected response and short essay
Selected Option D: That sounds really overwhelming, Daniel. Can you tell me more about the messages you have been noticing?
Justification
The reason for selecting D is because it takes into consideration a proper balance between empathy with gentle information gathering and it is quite crucial when someone reports perceptual disturbances. It also acknowledges distress which allows for better assessment of immediate risk and content.
Check GPT prompts, outcomes and reflections
That two chat GPT prompts are “reply empathically to a cousin reporting voices and paranoia, ask safety questions” and ” provide supportive message to someone who thinks neighbours spy and hears signals”
Reply to prompt 1: With respect to Prompt one, my reply would be ” I am really sorry why this is happening Daniel. Are you safe now? I can come to you if you need my help.
Reply to prompt 2: I believe you, would you like me to come near to you or is it okay to stay on the phone?
Reflection:
The prompts that I have used encourage safety compared to what ChatGPT has suggested. With my suggestions, it would be possible to convert general empathy into an accenable support plan.
